Decision-making new building

It’s really happening! Or as the announcement of the Dutch skating marathon the ‘Elfstedentocht’ in 1997 was heralded: ‘IT GIET OAN!’

Just before the summer holidays, the Board of Supervision decided that the constructions of a new, extra academy building on our own grounds can start. This decision was partly based on the positive advice of the Participation Council.

The condition they set for the project is that it has to be realised within the stated financial terms. This will be apparent with the completion of the European adjudication of the execution at the end of September. When this proceeds according to expectations, the site will be prepared for construction at the end of 2015. We’ll keep you informed!

Alterations of the buildings

Meanwhile, the refurbishment of the existing buildings is at full speed. In summer, a new annex is taken in use at the Overschiestraat 188 (about 10 minutes biking from the academy). This space serves as the replacement of the building at the Vetterstraat. In the upcoming half year, we will leave the TNT building, because the space won’t be available for us till the completion of the new building. In consultation with the users of the TNT building (VAV, Dog Time and the library), the preparations of their moving to the existing buildings are made. Though the start of the new school year will take place in the TNT building.

We apologize for the inconvenience that the refurbishment and moving might cause. We believe it will all be worth it!

Who is where?

Below, an overview of all the units of the organisation that are moved or will move in the near future.

Canteen

The canteen is being renewed and will in the end return to its former location. Temporarily, the canteen can be found in the former space of Design Lab, at the first floor of the Rietveld building. Here you can buy lunch, coffee, tea, drinks and snacks. Unfortunately, hot meals will not be available during this temporary situation. We’re still looking for a way to provide for this. The new canteen is expected to be in use from mid October.

Uitleen, videomontage, ICT workshops

The ICT workshops and ‘uitleen’ are moving from the 2nd floor to the 5th and 6th of the Benthem Crouwel building. The renovation will not be completely finished at the start of the new study year. This means the workshops are closed during the first weeks. In the end of September nearly everything will be in use again.

Design Lab

Design Lab moves to the 2nd floor of the Benthem Crouwel building. The rooms are expected to be completed this week.

Staff offices Facilities and Finances

In the end of September the offices of Facility Services and Finances will move to the 2nd floor of the Benthem Crouwel building. This completes all moving plans of the staff offices.

Public Rietveld

The office of Public Rietveld is moved from the 1st floor to the 2nd of the Rietveld building, to room 103.

Sandberg Institute

Almost the entire Sandberg is moved to the new temporary location at the Overschiestraat. This includes the offices. At the 6th floor of the Benthem Crouwel building, two of the temporary Master courses are housed: Materialisation in Art and Design (MAD) and Fashion Matters, because of their direct relation to the workshops and Rietveld Academy.

Department Fine Arts

In the coming year, the third year of Fine Arts will be accomodated at the Overschiestraat. This will replace their space at the Vetterstraat. Fine Arts will also still use the 3rd and 4th floor of the Benthem Crouwel building.

Department TXT

TXT will gain extra space at the 6th floor of the Benthem Crouwel building, because of the (expected) growth in the number of students. Also TXT will still make use of the 1st floor of the Rietveld building.

Project spaces

At the 2nd floor of the Benthem Crouwel building, three reservable project spaces are being realised.
